Former GOP Rep. Liz Cheney Endorses Kamala Harris For President

Former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) announced Wednesday she plans to vote for Vice President Kamala Harris for president, warning that GOP nominee Donald Trump poses an existential danger to the country.

“It is crucially important for people to recognize, not only is what I said about the danger that Trump poses something that should prevent people from voting for him, but I don’t believe that we have the luxury of writing in candidates’ names — particularly in swing states,” Cheney said at an event at Duke University, in the battleground state of North Carolina.

“As a conservative, as someone who believes in and cares about the Constitution, I have thought deeply about this. And because of the danger that Donald Trump poses, not only am I not voting for Donald Trump, but I am voting for Kamala Harris,” she added, eliciting applause and cheers from those in the audience.

Cheney, the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, was a deeply conservative representative in Congress and a vocal critic of Trump, particularly after he tried to overturn his 2020 election loss to Democrat Joe Biden. She helped lead the House select committee that investigated the deadly Jan. 6, 2021, attack on Congress by hundreds of Trump supporters seeking to keep him in the White House.

Ultimately, Cheney’s criticism of Trump led to her ouster from House GOP leadership and her loss to a Trump-supporting Republican in a 2022 primary in Wyoming.

Cheney is reportedly planning to make more appearances in key battleground states to speak out about the implications of a second Trump presidency, discussing “his abuse of the intelligence community and his attempt to corrupt the Justice Department,” The New York Times wrote.

Cheney is only the latest prominent Republican to back Harris’ campaign. Others include former Illinois Rep. Adam Kinzinger, former Georgia Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan and retired federal appeals court Judge J. Michael Luttig. Jimmy McCain, the son of the late Arizona GOP Sen. John McCain, also changed his voter registration to Democrat and plans to vote for Harris.
