During a Q&A in the Oval Office on Monday, President Donald Trump crashed out—as the kids say—at CNN White House correspondent Kristen Holmes. Trump was finishing a long, rambling statement about his recent discussion with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un when he singled out Holmes for having the audacity to ask a question about whether the Korean leader asked Trump to end military exercises in the region.
“Quiet, quiet, you’re very disrespectful,” Trump said. “Who are you with?
“I’m with CNN,” Holmes responded.
“Fake news,” Trump shot back. “You’re fake news. You’re a loud, boisterous person. You’re fake news. Be quiet. Be quiet. Be quiet. You’re a fake reporter, and you report fake news.”
Trump then signaled to another reporter, who asked if USS Lincoln had enough food aboard after reports of abysmal conditions aboard reportedly led to attempts by sailors to jump overboard.
“That was a CNN fake report,” Trump responded.
Trump also added that a retired “admiral” told him that lots of sailors were out to sea for periods of time—apparently, that’s what passes for evidence that the CNN report was “fake news.”
Trump may still be proven right, though in a far more oblique way.
With Paramount Skydance in the process of acquiring CNN’s parent company, the likelihood that the news network could actually become fake news—propagandizing right-wing delusions rather than delivering factual information about the world—appears to be increasing greatly.
