White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt gave a press briefing Monday on the White House Correspondents’ Dinner fracas, hitting all of the GOP talking points.
She blamed Democrats for the shooting, trying to tie President Donald Trump’s garish ballroom to national security, and ultimately proved—again—that Trump’s top priority is Trump.
“Nobody in recent years has faced more bullets and more violence than President Trump,” Leavitt said. “This political violence stems from a systemic demonization of him and his supporters by commentators, yes, by elected members of the Democratic Party and even some in the media.”
The people of Minnesota might disagree with this claim, having faced a series of fatal shootings of U.S. citizens by Trump’s immigration goons.
“The White House ballroom project is not just a fun project for President Trump like you will read in the media,” Leavitt said. “It is actually critical for our national security that a larger secure building on this complex—which is the most secure complex in the world—is built to accommodate not only large amounts of guests, but also the president, the vice president, members of the Cabinet.”
If there was any doubt about the audience she’s playing to ahead of her planned maternity leave, Leavitt then said the quiet part out loud.
“The American people should be assured there’s no higher priority for the president and his staff than the president’s safety,” she said.
That’s the through line, and everything else—from the rhetoric to the renovations—must bend around that single priority.
