Tuesday was a rough day for Donald Trump.
Not only is he having to deal with the fallout of his attempts to assert U.S. control over the autonomous territory of Greenland, but he also had a narrow escape from a binder clip during a press briefing.
It happened when Trump removed a large binder clip from an enormous file titled “365 Wins in 365 Days: President Trump’s Return Marks New Era of Success, Prosperity,” and the clip closed with a loud snap.

“Oh, I’m glad my finger wasn’t in that sucker!” Trump exclaimed to his audience before pointing out the danger he’d managed to avoid.
“That could have done some damage!” he said in a humorous aside.
Trump, with a slight smirk, then assured the crowd that he would have been stoic in the event of any binder-clip-related mishap. “But you know what? I wouldn’t have shown the pain.”
“Boy, did you hear that?” the president continued. “That was nasty! But I would not have shown the pain. I would’ve acted like nothing happened as my finger fell off.”

He then jokingly suggested “somebody” was responsible for putting him in harm’s way.
“That was nasty. I think somebody did that. I think it was him. It was my man,” he said to an unidentified audience member, working the crowd. “How are you? You didn’t do it. I know you didn’t. I know you didn’t.”
Somehow, despite the distraction of the leader of the free world possibly having a finger pinched, the president was able to get back on the real point of the briefing: praising his accomplishments over his first year back in office.
“Each line is something that we did,” he explained. “Nobody did that before! And it’s big stuff, too. Look, we have the hottest country in the world.”

Trump’s tangent over possibly being pinched by a binder clip is, of course, just one of the bizarre asides he made on Tuesday.
While discussing his controversial immigration program, he digressed into praising the Hells Angels biker gang, whose members he claimed “protected” him.

Rambling detours are a fairly common feature of Trump’s public speaking. Back in December, he regaled a rally crowd in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, by describing in a bit too much detail how the FBI’s 2022 search of Mar-a-Lago included a raid on Melania Trump’s lingerie drawer.
