Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) on Tuesday said Greenland stands a chance of remaining an autonomous territory within the kingdom of Denmark despite ongoing threats of a forcible takeover from President Donald Trump ā but only if congressional Republicans take action.
āIām not a great fan of my Republican colleagues, but I think that for a variety of reasons, including self-preservation, I think there are about 8% of the American people [who] think invading Greenland is a good idea,ā Sanders told āLate Showā host Stephen Colbert.

He continued, āSo you donāt want to campaign on that, and I think some of my Republican colleagues are understanding that this is just very, very crazy and not something that can be supported.ā
Trump first floated the idea during his first term, but revisited the plan more aggressively after bombing Venezuela, capturing its now-ousted leader NicolĆ”s Maduro and letting U.S. oil companies run roughshod over the nationās unmatched reserves.
Colbert agreed with Sanders that invading a fellow member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization is ācrazy,ā arguing the threat alone āsounds like the death of NATO,ā but challenged his premise that Republicans would prioritize this over their fealty to Trump.

Sanders appeared to have no solution other than chronicling NATOās historic benefits.
āI think understanding that we have had an alliance with European countries for well over 100 years, that we saved the world from Nazism and fascism because of the United States and the U.K. and France and European countries, I think thatās a deep alliance,ā he said.
The White House recently confirmed that U.S. military force is āalways an optionā should Denmark decline to sell Greenland, and when asked Tuesday during a news conference how far he might go if that continues to be the case, Trump told reporters: āYouāll find out.ā

The MAGA leader has also announced that multiple European countries would face new tariffs until a deal for āthe Complete and Total purchaseā is secure, and that he no longer feels āan obligationā to push for peace after not receiving the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize.
The honor went to Venezuelan opposition leader MarĆa Corina Machado, who notably handed it to Trump after he publicly hinted it āwould be a great honorā for him ā behavior which Sanders said Tuesday was that of a ānarcissistic, 4-year-old spoiled brat.ā

āIn the midst of all the craziness, the idea that you would have the president of the United States say, āNorway, you didnāt give me the Nobel Prize, I have to invade Greenland, you hurt my feelings,āā Sanders mockingly added. āI mean ⦠itās pathetic.ā
Colbert later returned to his central question about tangible steps to keep Trump out of Greenland, but when Sanders cited āa variety of waysā such as the War Powers Resolution Act, Colbert countered that this didnāt do a thing to stop Trump from bombing Venezuela.
Sanders went on to admit: āWell, we didnāt pass it.ā
