‘Why Won’t They Give Daddy What He Wants?’: Jesse Watters Flummoxed By Greenland Rejecting Trump

Fox News host Jesse Watters has joined a growing list of right-wing pundits and politicians in deeming President Donald Trump “Daddy,” dropping the cringey nickname while griping about Europe’s resistance to handing the autonomous Danish territory of Greenland over to the U.S.

On Wednesday’s installment of Fox News’ “The Five,” Watters suggested NATO should bend to Trump’s will and allow him to take control of Greenland.

“NATO called Trump ‘Daddy.’ Why won’t they give Daddy what he wants?” he asked.

Watters was specifically alluding to NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, who last year referred to Trump as “Daddy” while in conversation with the president during the NATO Summit in The Hague, Netherlands.

Rutte, of course, was not the first person to use the term. Republican Reps. Lauren Boebert of Colorado and Byron Donalds of Florida also embraced it on social media and in public appearances around the time Trump was sworn in for a second term last year, while actor Mel Gibson ― an outspoken conservative ― followed suit shortly thereafter.

Watters himself gushed about Trump’s “dad strength” last year, partly in response to the fervent media speculation surrounding the 79-year-old president’s health and physical stamina.

“You know dad strength? He doesn’t look like he’s in shape, but then he grabs you,” Watters said on Fox News in July. “One time, my father grabbed me, and I was like ‘Oh my God, this guy is stronger than I am!’ and I was like 18.”

Trump’s threats to take over Greenland have led to tensions between the U.S. and Europe, with Germany, France, Norway and Sweden deploying troops to the Arctic island this week in a show of support for Denmark.

Jessica Tarlov, a Democratic strategist who co-hosts “The Five,” pointed to “the lack of respect” Trump is showing a sovereign nation and longtime U.S. ally as she pushed back against Watters’ assertion.

“Sometimes Daddy needs to be told no,” she said. “That’s just the facts on the table.”
