Mamdani ran for mayor on the promise to make sure rent control in the city takes account of the finincial straits of young people just starting out. As we have heard frequently, especially since trump got into the White Houise, while promising to bring costs down and immedately caused most prices to go speedily in the opposite direction. Part of that was his idiotic tarrif war which adds to what the consumer ends up paying, but part of it was just the up and down and temporiment bullcrap in which he played the game of “see how much he can confuse our former friends and screw our cititenry.
Now 10 months after the most anti-American citizen person that ever pried himself into the White House literally running on hate, things have only gotten worse. Now we are in a government shut down. First it was that trump was trying to cover his very likely participation in the Pedophile ring, which is concistent with his rape of E Jean Carrol, oh, and by the way, has this man that loves to brag to everybody even let go of the money he owes E Jean?? My guess is he hasn’t and that is just one of the reasons the man SHOULD be behind bars. Of course there is also the treason he committed on Jan 6, 2021 with the insurrention he inspired in the mod of racist bigots and anti-American Americans that he gave all his love and attention to.
However, apparently in addition to the absolute stupidity of trump supporters not seeing that he is truely the enemy of the American citizen that isn’t a multi-billionaire, they also unaware of what life is like in New York City. Some of them claim to know all about the city but they prove themself wrong when the think that Mamdani and “rent control” is a sudden new, and they would say communist plot to end freedom.
Well, they need to read some history. For one thing, Rent-control has been a function of New York city government for over 80 years, since 1943. Yes, that is when the city of New York realized that they needed to do something to make the city more livable and set limit on how exordinately monthly rents could be made on the many renters.
Now prices were make “relatively affordable.” I went to New York City and stayed with some friends in Chelsea, close too “the village”. The people that lived there paid 1000.00 per month for a 2 1/2 room apartment. The apartment had a hole in the wall by the door. It was a fourth floor walk up and people got their mail at the metal box on the ground floor. I didn’t actually attention but those holes in the wall make me think there were likely bugs or beasts that surried from one apartment to another. A thousands dollars got you a rent-controlled apartment in 1980, but not a very nice apartment and it didn’t hurt to have at least two other roommates.
I haven’t been to New York City since then, but I suspect one of two thing has happened. Either the rents are sky high, or the conditions of the apartments are worse. Rent control as it stands now is probably more financially sound for the landlord than the renter. And OWNING a house in Manhattan would definitely be impossibe for someone at least a million dollars ready case, and what 25 year old, without super rich families do we know that count buy such?
Rent-control has been a function of the rental process in New York for 80 plus years, and always is in dangerous of having greedy landlorders jerk the prices up … the only protection for the renter is to have a Mayor who understand the situation and make the renters abide by a reasonable rise if they are allowed to add any more from year to year.
