The Trump White House sparked criticism on Tuesday for hijacking a viral TikTok meme to promote its anti-immigration agenda.
The video showed people in chains being escorted onto airplanes for what looked like their removal from the United States. It was set to the upbeat soundtrack of a 2022 commercial for British tour operator Jet2 in which voice actor Zoe Lister says “Nothing beats a Jet2 holiday” over Jess Glynne’s hit song “Hold My Hand.”
The audio of the ad has gone viral in recent months with people using it to ironically highlight their vacation disasters on social media.
But the White House’s use of the cheerful soundtrack drew swift backlash.
The caption on its post read: “When ICE books you a one-way Jet2 holiday to deportation. Nothing beats it!”
Jet2 did not immediately respond to HuffPost’s request for comment.
