Al Gore Likens Trump Admin To Nazi Germany: ‘Trying To Create Their Own Version Of Reality’

Former Vice President Al Gore is comparing Donald Trump’s administration to Adolf Hitler’s Nazi Party of the 1930s, an analogy that has become increasingly common during Trump’s second presidency.

The environmentalist Democrat argued at an event for San Francisco’s Climate Week that Republicans are “trying to create their own preferred version of reality” by blaming immigrants for global issues — just like the ultra-nationalist, xenophobic aggressors of World War II.

“I understand very well why it is wrong to compare Adolf Hitler’s Third Reich to any other movement,” Gore said onstage Monday, Politico reported. “It was uniquely evil, full stop. I get it. But there are important lessons from the history of that emergent evil.”

Trump’s slogan, “Make America Great Again,” left many voters of color in 2016 concerned about what exactly his election would mean. He recently deported a Maryland man without due process — and is defying the Supreme Court by refusing to facilitate his return.

The White House recently confirmed Trump is exploring how to deport U.S. citizens, too.

“We’ve already seen, by the way, how populist authoritarian leaders have used migrants as scapegoats and have fanned the fires of xenophobia to fuel their own rise of power,” Gore said Monday. “And power-seeking is what this is all about. Our constitution, written by our founders, is intended to protect us against a threat identical to Donald Trump.”

Gore, a longtime climate activist who lost the controversial 2000 election against former President George W. Bush, said Monday that Trump believes global warming “is a hoax invented by the Chinese to destroy American manufacturing.”

Trump has blamed foreign nations for the dearth of U.S. factory jobs and imposed a 145% tariff on all Chinese imports earlier this month.

The Trump administration has also fought to deport foreign-born students who participated in protests against Israel’s bombardment of Gaza, setting a dangerous precedent for the eradication of free speech and antiwar sentiment on college campuses.

“It was [German philosopher Jürgen] Habermas’ mentor, Theodor Adorno, who wrote that the first step in that nation’s descent into hell was, and I quote, ‘the conversion of all questions of truth into questions of power,’” Gore said in his speech, Politico reported.

“He described how the Nazis, and I quote again, ‘attacked the very heart of the distinction between true and false,’” he continued. “End quote. The Trump administration is insisting on trying to create their own preferred version of reality.”

Former President Barack Obama and ex-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton recently shared similar concerns. On Sunday, Trump threatened to prosecute news outlets that factually report that immigrant Kilmar Abrego Garcia was deported to El Salvador due to an “administrative error.”
