Iranian-backed militants attacked Iraq’s Ain al-Asad airbase on Saturday, leaving at least one member of Iraqi special forces seriously injured and “a number” of U.S. personnel being evaluated for possible traumatic brain injuries, U.S. Central Command said in a statement.
It was not immediately clear what weapons were involved in this attack, Reuters reported.
One anonymous official said that initial reports indicated the base was hit by ballistic missiles, while security sources in Iraq and one government source said the base was hit by rockets.
A second U.S. official said the attack was carried out by militants from within Iraq.
Since the beginning of Israel’s brutal military campaign in Gaza, which followed Hamas’ killing of roughly 1,200 people in Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, the U.S. military in Iraq has been attacked 58 times in retribution for its continued support of Israel’s actions in Gaza, which have killed at least 24,000 people.
