Federal Appeals Court Upholds Illinois Semiautomatic Gun Ban

Gun nuts are super mad this morning after a federal appeals court in Illinois upheld a semiautomatic gun ban. The law was put in place shortly after a 2022 mass shooting at a parade in Highland Park that left 7 people dead.

The three-judge appeals court panel voted to uphold the ban by a margin of 2-1. The sole dissent was from a Trump appointed judge, shocker. The 2 judges who voted to keep the ban in place stated that they recognized a difference between “firearms for personal use” and those for “trained professionals.”

The opinion stated:

“There is a long tradition, unchanged from the time when the Second Amendment was added to the Constitution, supporting a distinction between weapons and accessories designed for military or law-enforcement use and weapons designed for personal use. The legislation now before us respects and relies on that distinction.”

It is a sure thing that this case will get consolidated into a Supreme Court review, where it will probably be overturned based on the 6-3 conservative majority. But for now, these weapons of murder remain banned.
