Today, the DOJ, with the FBI involved, raided the home of the criminal ex-president of the United States in part to get back documents trump stole from the White House. Predictably, the right-wing trumped media is all at atwitter. Fox News, of course, reported the story as though it was some sort of crime that had never been done to any President (former or current) at any time in history.
Well, first of all, he is simply wrong. An investigation took place against the other criminal president, Tricky Dick Nixon, and not even for a crime as sordid as the one that trump committed. Nixon had the Watergate break-in, where he tried to spy on the Democratic campaign to get information to help him win. Trump, on the other hand, led an insurrection, or revolution if you will, against the process of peaceful transfer of power. And yes, I would say that is several orders of magnitude worse than what Nixon did, although there is no excuse for what Nixon did either.
What is, however, very different now than back in Nixon’s time, is that the Republican party still had enough moral backbone to stand against lawlessness, and apparently now they no longer have that moral backbone…they apparently gave trump command in order to appease the lowest common denomination in the country, the Oath Keepers and the Proud Boys. Both groups are nothing but right-wing domestic terrorists who have a history of using weapons even against Federal Marshalls (remember Clive Bundy).
On Fox, they presented the CPAC as though that was some sort of excuse for trump and the coup to be ignored. Well, any organization that lets a far-right dictator be a key speaker has, as far as I am concerned, given up the right to be considered a valid voice in true American politics. It just furthers my belief that the current Republican Party is a soulless construct that is opposed to everything that the United States has claimed to be for during the last 246 years, even understanding how poorly we have actually lived our ideals in real life. (look at our treatment of African Americans and Native Americans to see what I mean by that)
So what do we have to say in response to the rabid right and their attacks on the DOJ and the FBI for raiding Mar-a-Lago and getting evidence of trump’s criminal activity including sensitive documents that might very easily constitute a security breach if he delivered them into the wrong hands (like his buddy Putin)? Well, just remind them that trump is the one that incited an attempt at revolution against the government of the United States. HE DID THAT!!!!! Although people get testy about the definition of treason, I would say that is the very definition of treason.
But be that as it may, the fact that so many of the Republicans have sold their soul, or rather tendered it for free, to trump is not an argument against the FBI. It just shows how complicit the feckless current Republican party really is. In every single one of the states that trump insists was “stolen”, the counters had a huge percentage of Republicans involved and still repudiated his claim. While Mike Lindell and trump are still telling the same narrative, not one piece of believable evidence has ever been presented…just hearsay and gossip.
Rank and file republicans are almost to be pitied because they are just being led down the garden path by their ruthless overlords, but there is no excuse for the likes of MTG and some of the others for this idiocy. The Jan 6th committee has two very very conservative Republicans on it…each of which voted for trump policies almost every time. What they do have, however, is a moral backbone that tells them that when a man whips up a mob, and many former staffers in the Trump White House have testified to the truth of this, it is time to put partisanship behind and move to save the future of our nation. I would never vote for Kinzinger or Cheney for their position on policies, and I disliked Dick Cheney, but I have to give the two of them credit for standing up for their nation against the lawless criminality of the ex-president.
And yes, we want trump stopped. Because if he pays no price, and his followers were to manage to get him into office again, we see what damage he has done to the nation, and realize that 4 more years would probably end our democratic republic. He certainly gave plenty of clues that was his goal in his various unhinged speeches.
So, REJOICE and be Glad. For months, I have worried that the DOJ would allow trump to skate away taking no consequences for his actions, especially on Jan 6, 2021, and FINALLY, Garland Merrick has proceeded to do his job. I had been hoping and praying that he was working behind the scenes in that quiet way that the DOJ is historically prone to do, and that an investigation was coming, and am so relieved to see that I was right.
We somehow lost the opportunity to say in definite terms that NOBODY IS ABOVE THE LAW when we let Nixon resign with no consequences for his deeds. We have another opportunity to make that clear now. Let’s do it!!!!!!!!!!
If the evidence is there, and I am about 99 percent certain it is…I will rephrase what trump said about Hillary: LOCK HIM UP, along with his co-conspirators!!!!!
Let’s have Justice and prevent any other megalomaniac from trying this again.
